Welcome to Lyonheart84’s exotic fruit growing channel. In this video, we will be unboxing and planting persimmon, Asian pear, and fig tree orders that arrived in the UK. Stay tuned as we explore the different varieties and discuss their winter care.

Unboxing and Examining the Plants

On a sunny day in January 2018, Lyonheart84 received a box of plants which had arrived on Friday. These plants were a Christmas present from his parents, with a few persimmons and fig plants inside. The figs were expected to be potted, while the persimmons were likely to be bare-root.

Carefully unwrapping the box, Lyonheart84 discovers a fig variety called Goutte d’Or. The fig appears to be well-protected, and Lyonheart84 notices a couple of embryo figs on the tree, although he is unsure if they will survive the UK winter.

Growing Figs in the UK

In the UK, main crop figs are not common due to the short growing season. Instead, varieties like the Goutte d’Or produce embryo figs on the previous year’s growth. These figs overwinter and develop into a reasonable crop in the summer months of July to August.

To obtain these unusual fig varieties, Lyonheart84 ordered from the agroforestry research center in Devon Cornwall, known for their expertise in growing a range of unique fruits and nut trees.

Planting Persimmons

Returning to the unboxing, Lyonheart84 discovers the persimmon plants. One variety, called Garretson, is believed to be an American persimmon and appears to be a tall and healthy plant. Another variety, Co-Starter, is an Asian persimmon.

Asian Pear Planting

The final plant in the order is an Asian pear variety called Shinseki Dwarf. Although grown as a single stem, Lyonheart84 is pleased with its height, measuring around 5 to 6 feet. This pear variety is expected to thrive in the UK climate.

A Plan for Container Planting and Maintenance

As Lyonheart84 lives in London with limited garden space, he decides to keep all the plants in containers. This allows for better pruning and maintenance. The plan is to initially use three-gallon containers, or potentially larger ones if available, to give the plants ample space to grow.

Before planting, Lyonheart84 will mix up some compost to provide the plants with essential nutrients. He plans to keep them in containers until March, when they will start to bud out. This is to avoid disturbing the roots during the cold winter months.

Conclusion

In this video, Lyonheart84 excitedly unboxed an order of persimmon, Asian pear, and fig trees. He examined the figs, identified different varieties, and discussed their growth habits. Lyonheart84 also showcased the persimmons and Asian pear plant, highlighting their potential to bear fruit in the UK.
